I, Mulangi Mphego, in my personal capacity and as a former Special Advisor to the Deputy President, issue this statement regarding the death of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi and the disinformation campaign that has sought to implicate me in matters related to the Phalaphala investigation.
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Lieutenant General Sindile Mfazi. He was a dedicated public servant who served this country with distinction. His death deserves to be treated with the seriousness and dignity it warrants, and I call upon the relevant authorities to conduct a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
I categorically reject and deny any allegations that seek to connect me to the movement, concealment or destruction of any files, documents or materials related to the Phalaphala investigation or any other matter under investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Regarding the movement of property from Lieutenant General Mfazi's Pretoria residence: I wish to place on record that I was requested, in my personal capacity, to assist with the safekeeping of certain personal effects belonging to the Mfazi family following his passing. This was done openly, in good faith, and at the request of family members. No official documents, state property or investigative materials were involved in or formed part of this arrangement.
I have cooperated fully with all lawful requests from investigating authorities and will continue to do so. I have nothing to hide and welcome any lawful scrutiny of my conduct.
I call upon those responsible for spreading disinformation to cease and desist. The deliberate conflation of my personal assistance to a grieving family with allegations of obstruction of justice is reckless, defamatory and harmful to the integrity of legitimate investigative processes.
I remain committed to the rule of law and to the principles of accountability and transparency that underpin our constitutional democracy.
